Rajaji Tiger Reserve is the 48th Tiger Reserve of the country. It used to be a sanctuary of 246 sq km and now has grown to a tiger reserve with an area of 1057.17 sq km.
Rajaji tiger reserve has faced many grave issues in the past. Some of those were the relocation of van gujjars from a large area of the reserve, restoration of habitat, establishing good connectivity of the animal corridors, and monitoring and patrolling of the reserve to control poaching. This has resulted in improved tiger count in the reserve.
Rajaji Tiger Reserve is spread across varied ecosystems like grasslands, riverine forest and slopes of Shivaliks which make it a great place for diverse flora and fauna. The numerous trees, shrubs, orchids, fungi, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles & insects make exploring the reserve an adventurous & surprising experience.
There are about 315 species of birds in Rajaji.
Forest Rest House
Staying inside the Tiger Reserve is possible only in FRH (Forest Rest House) maintained by the forest department. These forest bungalows are mostly heritage properties, often over a century old. To experience the reserve at its best, at least a night stay at any of the FRH of the Rajaji Tiger reserve is a must. Experiencing the sounds of the jungle at night, the clear starry night sky and the calls of animals is absolutely magical. Sound of barbet at evening will remind you of the memories of childhood. You also can hear the deep heavy calls of the brown fish owl as if someone is playing a bass string of guitar.
From a wildlife perspective, Uttarakhand is naturally blessed with national parks and wildlife reserves in India which are inhabited by the most vivid flora and fauna. Rajaji Tiger Reserve’s natural prowess - its dense forests, green hills, fresh streams, flower-filled valleys and bamboo thickets double up as a natural habitat of the rarest of the rare plant and animal species.
